Bio
Ars Elegante musicians are conservatory trained and members of the American Federation of Musicians. Many are members of local orchestras and faculty in music studios or universities. We bring a high level of musicianship and a lifetime of training to our performances.
Carla Holtz is a freelance flutist and teacher in the northeast Ohio area. She holds degrees in both classical and jazz flute and is trained on bansuri (Hindustani flute) and Native American Flute. Her training in improvisational genres lends more freedom and expression to her classical performances. She receives great satisfaction from sharing music through teaching and performing.
Carla received her master's degree from Kent State University, OH where she was graduate assistant, and her bachelor's degree from Roosevelt University, IL. She is past principle flutist for the Kent State University orchestra, wind ensemble, and new music ensemble and has performed as a flutist in the Anthony Braxton Orchestra. She has performed at dinner parties for the Pepsi Corp., and parties attended by Chicago's Mayor Daley. She has taught privately for 15 years in her home studio, music stores, public schools, and private music schools to students ranging in age from 5 to 87. Carla developed a weeklong course to teach Native American Flute to adult students at The Clearing folk school in Wisconsin. She also cofounded a Native American flute circle that met for 5 years in northeast OH. Carla and her husband are active in the music ministry of Liberty Bible Church, leading ensembles, and performing special music. She was a member of The Ira Smith Trio, singing and playing Native American flute. This is the only bluegrass gospel group to use Native American flute.
